Recreation

Sheffield Mining & Transportation Company purchased one thousand acres of land and laid out a town naming it in honor of an original owner - Mr. Joseph E Sheffield of New Haven, Conn.  Due to the superior quality of coad which was easily mined and transported by the Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, the town prosperity grew for over 50 years.

Today, a rich history is featured in one of the oldest Danish lutheran churches in America (circ 1880) which is listed as a National Historic Landmark.
